of experience with the fallout from adult dieting lifestyles
gave rise to our teen program. Compare and contrast. For adults,
our message had to be break & rebuild; "break the diet cycle;
rebuild your self-esteem".
For teens, we can say: recognize & create; design a nondiet lifestyle
where food doesnt rule you; accept and celebrate your natural
body shape and make your own choices.
The
Teen Years:
There couldnt be a better time for instilling empowerment
skills.
Our
self reliant, health promotion model is ideally suited to the
emerging and increasing need for independence and self concept
building that is a normal developmental task of teenagers on
the road to adulthood. In other words, the characteristics of
the Teens & Diets: no weigh model fit the natural pattern of
growing up. The teen is assisted with self responsibility skills
and the parents are assisted with relinquishing tasks. Conflict
within the household over food/ appearance issues could be minimized
as new understandings emerge.
An additional expectation is that the onset of eating disorders
could be arrested if the food arena was removed from the "growing
up battlefield".
