Sound Bites Nutrition is made up by Maya Snijders and
Lesley Scott. We are both registered dieticians with experience
in nutrition counselling and present our classes together.
We have a lovely venue where HUGS participants will get together
around a table for a meal and work through the program with us.

Maya Snijders-Naumann. RD
I studied Dietetics because I was frustrated by the confusing,
conflicting information about food, dieting and weight management
that was around. I wanted answers, I wanted to know how to get
it right.
I graduated with a very clear idea of what I needed to eat
to supply my body with all the nutrients it needed. I was equipped
with charts and tables of food composition and energy expenditure.
I could work out exactly how many grams of anything I could eat
to supply my energy needs without altering my weight.
I was slim and healthy and in shape...but a neurotic mess!
It was only when I studied Linda Omichinski's Non-diet Weight
Management course material that I realised that I was a chronic
"dieter" and that I had a "diet mentality",
and even worse...that I was passing this on to my clients!
It was with a healthy amount of scepticism and fear that I
managed to let go of my diet thinking, little by little. I stopped
counting. I stopped measuring. I stopped obsessing and it has
made me free.
I am still slim and healthy and in shape, but I am now also
flexible and enjoy eating and exercise like I never thought possible.
Freedom from the insidious diet trap is possible, and Hugs
is a fantastic programme to facilitate the change. It IS hard
to let go of a thinking pattern that's been established over
years, but it is really worth it.
Lesley Scott BSc Human Life Sc, M Nutr
I am passionate about working with the nutritional
aspects of the human body and its complex interaction with human
body functions. I studied BSc. Human Life Sciences, focusing
on nutrition, physiology, genetics and psychology. This gave
me a solid understanding of the physical, mental and behavioural
aspects of life. I realised that food plays a prominent role
in all these fields and I decided to further my understanding
thereof through a Master of Nutrition degree.
My Masters Degree covered a wide range of subjects that centered
on supplying the body with nutrients through healthy eating.
I focused my studies on Pediatric Nutrition, the Management of
Food Allergies, and Diabetes. These modules made me aware of
the benefits of healthy, long-term weight management and the
consequences of its neglect.
I quickly learned that there is no enjoyment and very little
reward in measuring body proportions, reading charts and counting
calories. I do not believe in constantly calculating how much
to eat in order to address nutritional problems. I believe there
are far better options than following rigid eating programs.
Being stuck in a diet mentality is unfulfilling and very often
unsuccessful. Learning to make healthier food choices is a lifelong
and worthwhile process of discovering for yourself what your
body needs. Eating healthily should not be a habit; it should
be a personal decision and preference. Food is an exciting, colourful
and necessary part of life that can and should be enjoyed by
all.
